1. The World Environment Day (WED) was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972. The first World Environment Day was on 1973. World Environment Day is hosted every year by a different city with a different theme and is commemorated with an international exposition on the week that 5 June is on.
2. The slogan for the 2005 WED was "Plan for the Planet" and the Slogan for WED 2006 was "Don't Desert Drylands."
3. Whereas the slogan for the WED 2008 was "CO2, Kick the Habit! Towards a low Carbon Economy" and the one for WED 2009 was "Your Planet Needs You - UNite to Combat Climate Change" and the one for this year is "Many Species. One Planet. One Future".
4. The host city for this year's WED is Kigali, Rwanda and the one for last year was Mexico City, Mexico.
5. The United Nations Conference on the Human Environment (also known as the Stockholm Conference) was an international conference convened under United Nations auspices held in Stockholm, Sweden from June 5-16, 1972. This is when the WED was officially established.
6. There are many official environmental dates which are established by the UN, some of these are UN World Day for Water on 22nd March (the Factorium commemorated it), UN World Population Day on July 11 and UN World Day to combat desertification and drought on June 17.
7. The other environmental dates include International Mountain Day on December 11, World Soil Day on December 5, International Day of Climate Action on October 24, International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer on September 16 and World Wetlands Day on February 2.
