A Fact A Day # 20

Today we are going to see something about the World Heritage Sites in the world. As of 2009, there are a total of 890 World Heritage Sites located in 148 countries. Of the 890 sites, 689 are cultural, 176 are natural and 25 are mixed properties. The countries have been divided by the World Heritage Committee into five geographic zones: Africa, Arab States, Asia-Pacific, Europe & North America, and Latin America & the Caribbean. The top 10 Countries with the number of World Heritage Sites are:

1. Italy- 44 World Heritage Sites.
2. Spain- 41 World Heritage Sites.
3. China- 38 World Heritage Sites.
4. France- 33 World Heritage Sites.
5. Germany- 33 World Heritage Sites.
6. Mexico- 29 World Heritage Sites.
7. United Kingdom- 28 World Heritage Sites.
8. India- 27 World Heritage Sites.
9. Russia- 23 World Heritage Sites.
10. United States of America- 20 World Heritage Sites.
