A Fact A Day # 6

Today, we are going to peep into the History of Detective Fiction since 1841 to 1935. Here is a timeline of events concerning Detective Fiction that we all read today. It is also called as a 'whodunit' story. The timeline is as follows:

1841- The first authentic appearance of the modern Detective Story with the publication of The Murders in the Rue Morgue by Edgar Allan Poe.

1845- Edgar Allan Poe publishes two more 'whodunits', The Mystery of Marie Roget and The Purloined Letter.

1861- French novelist Paul Feval writes Jean Diable.

1863-1875- Paul writes a sprawling criminal saga stretched over a 12 year period called Les Habits Noris

1868- Wilkie Collins writes Moonstone.

1875- American spy Allan Pinkerton writes The Expressman and the Detective and follows up with others.

1887- The wonder year of Detective Fiction when Sir Arthur Conan Doyle writes a short novel A Study in Scarlet, introducing the one and only Sherlock Holmes with his friend and chronicler Dr.Watson.

1887-1927- The golden era of Sherlock Holmes. Arthur publishes 56 short stories along with 2 more novels in this period.

1911-1935- G.K Chesterton's creation Father Brown appears first in the story The Blue Cross and he keeps it going with 52 other stories during this period.
