A Fact A Day # 9

All of us have heard the word 'meat'. To some, it is mouth watering and tasty and some regard it as something untouchable and uneatable. I respect both the decisions. Today's fact concerns Meat. Let us see what exactly is meat and the culinary names given for the meat of some animals.

Meat is animal flesh that is used as food. The word meat comes from the Old English word mete, which referred to food in general. Here are some culinary names given to the meat of some animals:

1. Beef - meat derived from Bovines, especially cattle.
2. Australus - meat derived from Kangaroos.
3. Chicken - meat derived from Chickens.
4. Duck - meat derived from birds of the Anatidae family. (namely ducks, swan, geese).
5. Veal - meat derived from young cattle.
6. Crabmeat - meat derived from crabs.
7. Catflesh - meat derived from cats.
8. Pork - meat derived from pigs.
9. Horsemeat - meat derived from equines.
10.Venison - meat derived from deer,.

Meat from endangered species of animals is also being eaten today. This practice is resulting in loss of some endangered animals. Also, eating less meat reduces our carbon footprint. Eating more meat results in global warming. So keep these things in mind when you eat meat the next time. So eat less meat, save your carbon footprint.
